Music is an important and joyous part of our worship at St. Monica and St. James.

High Mass on Sunday is accompanied by organ and piano music. We encourage the entire congregation to sing. As part of the Liturgy we all sing the Ordinary of the Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. We also sing the psalm, usually to a Gregorian psalmtone, as well as the Minor Propers: Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory and Communion Antiphons.

Our hymnody represents a breadth of music tradition, including the general Episcopal Hymnal 1982, the African-American Episcopal hymnal Lift Every Voice and Sing II, and many additional sources.

The Choirs sing a wide repertoire. At High Mass in our Parish, you might hear anything from Gregorian chant to a 16th-century anthem, a Shaker tune, or a setting of a traditional spiritual or another piece by an African-American composer.

Of course, there is always room for more voices! We welcome anyone with a desire to sing who can come to most rehearsals. Contact our music director, Daniel Elmer, at 202-546-1746  or email to find out more.

Rehearsals are as follows:

-- The Anthem Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30.
-- The Parish Choir joins the Anthem Choir at 9:15 Sunday mornings to rehearse together before the 10:00am High Mass.
